Silica Awareness Training ACT

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has introduced mandatory crystalline silica training, under WHS Reg 418D, similar to their existing asbestos awareness course.

REQUIRED TRAINING

  1. VET course (10830NAT) for workers who might reasonably be expected to conduct high-risk crystalline silica work; and

  2. Silica awareness training for virtually every other worker who might go onto any building improvement, renovation, repair or construction site.

OCCUPATIONS TO BE TRAINED

The key occupations required to complete the ACT silica awareness training include:

  • Architects

  • Builders & labourers

  • Building trades

  • Fencers

  • Locksmiths

  • Roofers

  • Sign erectors

  • Tilers

  •  Civil & structural engineers

  • Commercial cleaners

  • Earthmoving plant operators

  • Glaziers

  • Pest controllers

  • Safety inspectors

  • Telecommunications workers

  • Handypersons

COST OF TRAINING & DURATION

The cost of silica awareness training in ACT ranges from a free 3-hour awareness course for CFMEU Incolink members, to about $375 per person for half-day sessions from various training organisations, up to a 1-day combined silica and asbestos awareness course for $570.

RECORDS TO BE KEPT

Employers are required to keep a record of the VET course or awareness training for 5 years after the worker ceases their employment.

We suggest you confirm your trade and worksite team have completed the required Silica training before undertaking any building work in the ACT.
