High number of Limbs or Digits Lost in Workplace Incidents
Victorian workers suffered more than 150 amputated body parts in 2022. Most of these body parts amputated were fingers or thumbs. WorkSafe Victoria accepted a total of 137 claims for workplace amputation injuries in 2022.
The industry with the most amputations was manufacturing, accounting for 45% of claims, with construction making up 15% of claims.
Eight companies were prosecuted by WorkSafe after workers sustained amputations in 2022. Fines and court costs totalling $256,094 were imposed. by the courts.
All amputations are traumatic for the worker and co-workers.
WorkSafe Victoria is urging employers to ensure all machinery is properly guarded and operated safely to avoid amputation injuries.
